Western Lamps and Lighting that Give your Home a Prairie Glow

Lamps and lighting are a deeply integral part of any home design, and double for any Western home decor plan. Because they generate light, lamps and wall scones offer some of the best focal point opportunities for any room, and the light they shed should be carefully chosen to complement the room and its uses. A bedroom needs relatively gentle, even light to contribute to the desired restful atmosphere, but the living room or studio should have significantly brighter light, perhaps with a few recessed spotlights, to account for increased family activity and the pursuit of hobbies and recreation.

The first light fixtures that are noticeable in any home decor are floor and table lamps. These lighting pieces add needed light that is gentler and more diffuse than most overhead lighting, and they also offer wonderful opportunities for sculptural motif repetition in an integrated overall theme.

The Wooly Sheep offers several beautiful table lamps in a charming rustic pattern, ranging from metal sculpture tree lamps for a mountain home to Old West style Tiffany glass lamps, perfect for creating an elegant feel while retaining a homy feel.

The Bearfoots collection of table lamps, which would add a wonderful sense of whimsy to any family room, can also be found at the Woolly Sheep. Also catering to Northwestern wilderness themes, Black Forest Decor also offers a series of bear lamps, showing these gentle giants in naturalistic settings perfect for a cabin setting.

Lone Star Western Decor offers such a wide variety of table lamps that we would have serious difficulty in covering them all here. Their collection contains lamps that are specifically designed for Southwestern, rancher, Old West elegance, Native American, and equestrian themes. The lamp we particularly liked of theirs is the silver and leather lamp. This solidly molded table lamp features the traditional leather and tooling of Western saddles, and its elegant shape works perfectly in just about any Western themed home.

Gift Springs only has one Western table lamp to offer, but it's oh so beautiful. A regal snowy wolf regards the world from his painted porcelain plate, which the metal lamp with its painted to match shade is specially designed to display for best effect. We've heard that they do get other lighting pieces in from time to time, so it's always best to check.

Sunland Home Decor carries some of the finest in both floor and table lamps. Their Kokopelli floor lamp adds both welcome and tradition to foyers, living rooms or hallways with its friendly Native piper and Southwestern landscape. Their table lamp collection features mostly wrought or pierced steel artworks, with a lovely equestrian theme which is sure to add a feeling of freedom and companionship to any room.

Stacks and Stacks carries the Billy the Kid leather lamp. This elegantly sculpted and tooled piece is the only one of its kind we've found, and creates a perfect focal point for those truly devoted to the grandeur, history, and legend of the Old West.

Wall sconces provide hallway and room light with no floor footprint, yet shares the gentle indirect nature of lamps. Wall scones should be carefully used in Western decor, but with a large enough wall space to let sconces shine as the artworks they are, they can be effectively used for indirect lighting while maintaining the feel of spaciousness.

A variety of high contrast rustic wall sconces can be found at the ever reliable Wooly Sheep. Their collection focuses on those sconces that most closely resemble or echo chandelier fixures, which are wonderful for supporting a large chandelier in a smaller room that otherwise might not be a good fit. Each sconce is unique and crafted of the finest materials. We'd particularly like to draw attention to the modern Western design of the Roy Nicholson Indoor sconce. Bare winter branches of steel delicately trace around a cone of frosted glass for an understated impact that will add spare elegance to the right room.

Black Forest Decor's selection of wall sconces is simply enormous, ranging from half cylinders to pentagonal fixtures appropriate for hallways and large rooms that require several sources of light. Each and every one of them is beautiful, but the Timber Ridge series, which successfully replicates the effects of firelight through well tanned and sculpted thin rawhide framed by branches or metal, is the most beautiful. These special sconces give off a warm amber glow through different silhouette artworks, designed to enhance the atmosphere of any Western home.

Lone Star Western Decor's collection of wall sconces and vanity lights tends more towards the traditional Western decor motifs, with metal cutout horseshoe and star images, painted beautifully in muted colors that allow the light to create lovely effects. They also have bundled twig sconces that recall the ingenuity of the pioneers in the simple elegance of their design.

No Western home is complete without a lovely chandelier to provide a focal point in the most important social rooms. Chandeliers do much more than contribute overhead light, they provide airy wonder and elegance to any room large enough to support them. As suggested above, it can be useful to visually tie them to the room with matching or coordinating wall sconces, but many Western homes, spacious as they are, can support a chandelier without help.

Aspen Lighting has the largest family of chandeliers we've managed to find. They carry a full range of traditional Western chandeliers that contribute a very Old West appeal to their homes. We particularly liked their saloon style chandeliers, which would be a perfect focal point for a Western family's dining room. For sheer Western elegance, though, we prefer Aspen Lighting's Mission series, a collection of chandeliers and ceiling fixtures drawn from the Spanish mission aesthetic. Highly reminescent of Frank Lloyd Wright's work, these stained glass creations of line and light dance on air, and are sure to have friends and family admiring your taste for years to come.

The collection of rustic chandeliers at the Woolly Sheep tie in with the lamp collection, featuring cut out and pierced metal sculpture panoramas. Beautiful additions to a Rockies themed home, these chandeliers are sure to draw attention to your love of the mountains! The Shadow Mountain Ponderosa Pine chandelier is particularly elegant, with finely detailed pine boughs rendered in silver winding around around the tines with frosted glass "pine cones" for the chandelier lights.

The selection of chandeliers at Black Forest Decor tends toward saloon style offerings shaded in the warm butter tones of rawhide leather, wonderful accents for the rancher home. Our featured favorite is the Cedar Log chandelier, a sturdy construction of logs and iron that symmetrically balances strength and delicate silver light. Black Forest also carries two unique canoe themed chandeliers that come off beautifully in soft neutral colors and rawhide lamp shades.

The Western chandeliers at Lighting by Gregory are beautiful conjunctions of metal swooping times and gently curving light globes that are so simply, luxuriously elegant that they can be successfully used in any Western themed home. Whether you prefer Americana Western or Southwestern, these chandeliers integrate seamlessly into your overall Western decor.

Ceiling fixtures are the perfect solution for a room that needs an overhead light, but is not big enough to support a full sized chandelier. Gone are the days of a simple painted glass square screwed over a lightbulb, today's ceiling fixtures qualify as works of art. Each of our featured online lighting stores, the Woolly Sheep, Black Forest Decor, Lone Star Western Decor, Aspen Lighting, and Lighting by Gregory feature ceiling fixtures that are perfectly made smaller versions of their chandeliers. In addition, Lighting by Gregory carries a full selection of ceiling fans to enhance air flow in pure Western style.
